Dandenong Ranges

Dandenong Ranges

The Dandenong Ranges (commonly just the Dandenongs) are a set of low mountain ranges, rising to 633 metres at Mount Dandenong, approximately 35 km east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The ranges consist mostly of rolling hills, steeply weathered valleys and gullies covered in thick temperate rainforest, predominantly of tall Mountain Ash trees and dense ferny undergrowth.

After European settlement in the region, the range was used as a main source of timber for Melbourne. The ranges were popular with day-trippers from the 1870s onwards. Much of the Dandenongs were protected by parklands as early as 1882 and by 1987 these parklands were amalgamated to form the Dandenong Ranges National Park, which was added to again in 1997. The range experiences light to moderate snow falls a few times most years, frequently between late winter and late spring.

Today, the Dandenongs are home to over 100,000 residents and the area is popular amongst visitors, many of which stay for the weekend at the various Bed & Breakfasts through the region. The popular Puffing Billy Railway, a heritage steam railway, runs through the southern parts of the Dandenongs.

Monreale Cottages appreciates guests who would like a bit more information before booking. Hopefully the list below will answer many of your questions but if not, please email the Venue Manager directly on bookings@monrealecottages.com.au.

Breakfast Provisions

As a guest at Monreale Cottages, breakfast provisions are not included as part of your tariff. However, please let us know if you would like to add breakfast to your stay as we have many yummy options on offer!

Bush Fire Preparedness

Monreale Cottages was built in 1902 and, having been bypassed by past bushfires in the Hills, it remains as secure and intact today as it was 100 years ago. We are told that one of the many reasons for this is the estate's location at the bottom of Sassafras Gully in a rainforest setting.

Business Facilities

Telstra is the only mobile phone network with reliable reception at the property due to our location in a rainforest gully. Mobile phone reception for other carriers can be obtained at Sassafras village which is 3 kilometres away. Complementary WiFi is available at the property.

Chauffeur Service

Due to insurance liability requirements, we are not permitted to provide a chauffer service for guests wishing to be picked up or taken to restaurants and reception centres. We are pleased to pre-arrange and book taxis and other transport providers as and when you require.

Check-In and Check-Out Times

Check-in is from 3:00 PM on day of arrival. We ask that guests notify us if they plan to arrive after 8:00 PM so that special arrangements can be made.
Check out is before 11:30 AM on day of departure.

We are happy to discuss your needs regarding children. There is plenty of separation between cottages to cater for individual privacy.

Credit Card – Additional Charges

The Management of Monreale Cottages reserves the right to charge the credit card of clients for any additional costs incurred. Examples of situations where additional charges may apply include, but are not limited to:
Repair/Replacement of damaged property above fair wear and tear
In the event that your accommodation unit is vacated and left excessively dirty an additional cleaning cost amount will be advised to you and then charged to your card
Use of mini bar items or extra services

Check all cupboards to avoid leaving behind any valuables or personal belongings. Any belongings left behind, that need to be posted to guest will incur a postal charge.
Ensure cottage door is locked and the key is returned to the lock box upon departure.

Disabled Access to Cottages or Retreats

As our property is located on a semi steep hill slope, we have a variety of paths and steps to engage and encounter, if this is of concern to you we suggest you discuss your needs with us as certain access solutions can be provided to enable and facilitate your participation.

Eating In or Out

All cottages and retreats have a fully equipped kitchen designed to make self-catering as easy as possible – fridge, microwave, gas cook top, oven, china, cutlery and glasses.
We also offer a great selection of in-cottage dining options via our personal shopper service. Save time and a trip to the shops by having all of the ingredients and recipes needed to create a beautiful home-made dinner delivered to the cottage prior to your arrival.
Eating out is also very convenient as Olinda, Mt Dandenong, Sherbrook and Sassafras Village are only a short distance from the property and have an array of restaurants and eating establishments.

Additional persons will be charged at:

Well-behaved dogs are always welcome. If you would like to bring your fur child along with you, there is a $25/pet/night fee applicable.

Power Failures

Major blackouts can occur during severe storms, and as we rely entirely on electricity for virtually everything that opens and shuts on the property, temporary inconvenience issues may arise. Thankfully most occur very late at night or very early in the morning, but these events will still cause the water to stop because the pumps won't work. Unfortunately, the use of showers and toilets will be delayed until power resumes. On such occasions we provide temporary water for toilet flushing and cups of tea.

Privacy Statement

Monreale Cottages are committed to protecting our guests'  privacy before, during, and after their stay with us. All information remains strictly private and will not be divulged to any other unauthorised party. Your presence at Cottages at Monreale is nobody else's business. We will decline to divulge your presence here should anyone ring inquiring for you – unless instructed otherwise by you.

Public Lighting

All paths have external all night secure lighting for your safety.

Servicing Accommodation

We do not service during your stay.

Smoke-Free Environment

All internal areas, including the cottages and retreats, are smoke-free environments. In the event that you do smoke in the accommodation, you will be charged an additional cleaning fee to rid the area of smoke aromas. For smokers, we have provided facilities for smoking on the decking outside of each cottage or retreat.

Travel Time from Melbourne

Generally allow at least one and a half hours from the airport or city, and one hour from the eastern suburbs.

Visitors / Friends

Most of our guests place great value on the seclusion, privacy and serenity of the property. With this in mind, we have a strict NO VISITOR policy. Should you wish to have a small number of friends or visitors for a brief daytime visit during your stay, you must seek permission beforehand from reception.

Water our Precious Resource

We are not connected to mains water and rely on pumping our own water supply. We receive water from two sources, both controlled by mother nature. Firstly, we have our rainwater collection system, and secondly our natural spring water that we mix with rain water to form a delightful mineral spring concoction. We store this water in a holding tank and pump the water back under pressure to each accommodation unit. This system works well until we are hit by storms, which can temporarily affect the colour but not the quality or safety of the water. Whilst we have ample water supplies, we request that you are mindful to limit your water usage to reasonable limits taking into account the needs of spas and other domestic appliances and uses.

What Do You Need to Bring With You?

All of our cottages and retreats are fully provisioned with linen, towels, toiletries and are self-contained for your convenience. Supplies for the wood fireplace are not provided, however guests are welcome to bring their own. Alternatively, firewood, kindling, firelighters and matches can be ordered and delivered to the cottage prior to your arrival.
